Purpose of the role

The Advanced Trainee O&G Registrar position (Advanced Obstetrics and MFM) at Logan Hospital is intended as an opportunity to act at the level of an unaccredited MFM Fellow, gaining experience and skills in advanced obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine, and organisational and leadership skills required for the transition from senior registrar to consultant position, or application to the CMFM training program.

This role would include an opportunity to complete the Advanced Obstetrics ATP.

You will work predominantly within the Logan Maternal Fetal Medicine unit which cares for a high volume of high risk pregnancy, fetal structural anomalies and complex twins, and diagnostic and limited therapeutic fetal procedures.

Over the course of the appointment, rostering includes:

An opportunity to complete the Advanced Obstetrics ATM including a dedicated 6 month period:

o    Rostering dedicated as the Maternal Fetal Medicine senior registrar (acting as an unaccredited MFM Fellow)

o    Training and performance of obstetric ultrasound with dedicated supervised teaching lists within MFM

o    Participation in the weekly Maternal Fetal Medicine and Obstetric Medicine MDTs

o    Involvement in MFM consultations for high risk pregnancy, fetal anomalies, Paediatric subspecialty/neonatology counselling and assistance in MFM procedures

o    Participation in high risk antenatal clinic (including participation in the Obstetric Medicine Clinic with support for inpatient and outpatient consultations)

Potential participation on the Consultant/senior staff roster (if 6th year) for 3 months, or as a registrar reliever offering some limited team gynaecology experience depending on need, including:

o    Experience as Senior registrar or 1st on-call (Consultant 2nd on Call) on senior after hours roster including coverage of birth suite delivering >4000 babies/year

o    Leadership of, and ability to teach training registrars

A three month period of senior birth suite after hours in a busy >4000 unit obstetric unit

Support progression with other advanced training requirements including:

o    Generalist Obstetric ATM

o    Medical and Surgical Abortion ATM

o    Sexual Health ATM,

o    Colposcopy, Medical Education, Contraception, Abortion and Sexual Health SIM

Academic development, Administration and Leadership (with protected administration time)

Your key responsibilities

Fulfil the accountabilities and responsibilities of this role in accordance with Metro South’s purpose and objectives, as outlined below.

Administration and Leadership

o    Participation as appropriate in departmental Consultant meetings and policy development for the unit

o    Participation in the training and assessment of Core trainees (and of RMOs, if appropriate)

o    Involvement in audit/junior staff rostering or education roster lead

o    Organisation and performance of education activities for medical students, resident MOs and registrars

General Responsibilities

o    Provision of high-quality medical care to obstetric and gynaecological patients

o    Responsible for the management of patients admitted to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, under the supervision and guidance of the Unit’s Duty Consultant, and for ensuring that the Consultant is kept informed of any significant changes in the condition of any patient which could result in an adverse outcome.

o    Ensure comprehensive, legible, accurate and concise medical records are maintained for the patients for whom they are responsible.

o    Ensure that each patient in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit has an appropriate admission documented which contains a provisional diagnosis and management plan and the ability to manage a busy labour ward.

o    Assess any patient referred to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit by the Emergency Department or another inpatient unit and to bring the referral to the Duty Consultant’s attention so a specialist opinion may be given.

o    Interview, examine, carry out procedures according to level of training and arrange appropriate investigations and treatment of medical patients, and to ensure any such actions are properly documented.

o    Undertake clinical duties in an outpatient setting, as required by and under the supervision of the Unit Consultant.

o    Provide guidance to junior house staff and liaise with nursing/midwifery staff and allied health professionals as clinically appropriate.

o    Work rostered shifts at the direction of the Director Obstetrics and Gynaecology or Senior Medical Staff, ensuring availability as rostered or that in the event of illness, notice has been provided in time to arrange suitable cover. Rostering may involve overtime, evening/night shifts, weekends and public holidays.

o    Participate in and attend clinical meetings, educational activities and clinical audits

o    Maintain an interest in self-development and education.

o    Commit to patient safety and quality in the delivery of health care by actively participating in safety and quality practices.

o    Be able to perform core birth suite and gynaecology skills independently with on call consultant on site and remote after hours.

o    This position reports to the Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. No direct budget responsibilities.

o    Ensure patients and other staff are treated fairly and with mutual respect and understanding, regardless of cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.

o    Follow defined service quality standards, occupational health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

o    Perform duties as determined by the Service;

o    Perform any other duties directed by the Service which are within their scope of practice and for which they are registered in the State;

o    Perform other provisions related to the duties of the Medical Officer as agreed by the parties;

o    Implement and support clinical models of care and patient safety initiatives as required;

o    Support alternative revenue sources and maximise funding for the delivery of service (where appropriate);

o    Participate in an annual performance review;

o    Lead and manage staff by fostering and committing to patient safety and quality in the delivery of health care by maintaining and evaluating safety and quality practices and initiatives.

o    All relevant health professionals, who in the course of their duties formulate a reasonable suspicion that a child or youth has been abused or neglected in their home/community environment, have a legislative and a duty of care obligation to immediately report such concerns to Child Safety Services, Department of Communities.

Mandatory qualifications, professional registration and other requirements

MBBS (or equivalent), registered as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia.

Currently undertaking Fellowship training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists at an Advanced Trainee level (having completed the requirements of ITP training), or equivalent

Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership (if applicable) with the appropriate registration authority or association. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager prior to commencement of clinical duties.
