Purpose of the role
The Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellow role at Logan Hospital provides a training opportunity for senior registrars or junior FRANZCOG consultants, working towards training in the Certificate of Maternal Fetal Medicine. The unit is anticipated to hold an accredited training place in 2027.
The MFM Unit at Logan Hospital provides a tertiary subspecialty service to patients in the Metro South Catchment inclusive of tertiary level ultrasound and consultation and invasive procedures. The Department operates as a multidisciplinary team inclusive of MFM midwives and sonographers and close links to Obstetric Medicine, Neonatology, paediatric subspecialties and prenatal genetics. Logan Hospital anticipates uplift to a level 5 NICU in 2027.
You will be involved in both inpatient and outpatient care within the Logan Maternal Fetal Medicine unit which cares for a high volume of high risk pregnancy, fetal structural anomalies and complex twins, and diagnostic and limited therapeutic fetal procedures. The role works closely with General Obstetrics, Obstetric Anaesthetics, Obstetric Medicine and Neonatology, and offers opportunities for leadership development and growth alongside clinical training.
Rostering as the Fellow within the MFM Department includes rostered activities in line with the CMFM curriculum including:

- Dedicated supervised teaching ultrasound lists supported by MFM sonographers and consultant
- MFM consultations for high risk pregnancy, fetal anomalies and opportunities to be involved in Paediatric subspecialty/neonatology counselling and prenatal genetics counselling
- Twice weekly fetal medicine clinic and maternal medicine clinic, including possible participation in the Obstetric Medicine clinic with support for inpatient and outpatient consultations)
- Preparation and presentation of weekly Maternal Fetal Medicine MDT, and participation in Obstetric Medicine MDTs
- Supervised training and practice of diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound guided MFM procedures
- Rostering to on call Obstetrics as either a senior registrar or 1st on-call Consultant, depending upon training level, including coverage of birth suite delivering around 4300 babies/year.
- Leadership of, and ability to teach training registrars
- Academic development, Administration and Leadership (with protected administration time)
- Involvement in Governance including as lead Fellow of the Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality review meetings.

- Participation as appropriate in departmental meetings and policy development for the unit
- Participation in the training and supervision of registrars
- Organisation and performance of education activities for both medical and interdisciplinary teams
- General Responsibilities
- Provision of high-quality medical care to obstetric patients, including those with high risk pregnancies under the care of the Maternal Fetal Medicine team
- Responsible for the management of patients admitted under the Maternal Fetal Medicine Team, under the supervision and guidance of the MFM Consultant, and for ensuring that the Consultant is kept informed of any significant changes in the condition of any patient which could result in an adverse outcome.
- Ensure comprehensive, legible, accurate and concise medical records are maintained for the patients for whom they are responsible.
- Carry out assessments, consultations and procedures according to level of training and arrange appropriate investigations and treatment of medical patients, and to ensure any such actions are properly documented.
- Undertake clinical duties in an outpatient setting, as required by and under the supervision of the Unit Consultant.
- Provide guidance to junior house staff and liaise with nursing/midwifery staff and allied health professionals as clinically appropriate.
- Work rostered shifts at the direction of the Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine, ensuring availability as rostered or that in the event of illness, notice has been provided in time to arrange suitable cover. Rostering may involve overtime, evening/night shifts, weekends and public holidays.
- Be able to perform core birth suite skills independently, or with support of remote on call consultant if FRANZCOG not obtained.
- Staffing and budget responsibilities:
- To facilitate budget and compliance by the efficient and effective use of resources.
- The following positions report to the Principal House Officer: Intern, Junior House Officer and Senior House Officer.
- This position reports to the Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine.
- To provide ethical decision making in the achievement of organisational goals.
- Provide inpatient and outpatient care by
- Assessing patients, determining and instigating appropriate investigations;
- Establish management plan for patients in consultation with the consultant;
- Where appropriate, ensure discharge planning commences early in the process of care (inpatients only);
- Communicate assessment findings, proposed management plans and alternatives to patient and carers and seek consent;
- Gather input from appropriate multidisciplinary team for patients ongoing clinical care;
- Continually monitor and review patient progress and adjust the management plan when necessary; and
- Ensure timely, effective and appropriate clinical handover with other staff and healthcare providers.
- Ensure appropriate and timely communication to the General Practitioner, other health care providers and carers to ensure ongoing patient care post hospital stay.
- Develop a clear understanding of the role and the roles of those in other professions and use this knowledge appropriately to establish consumer goals and to achieve streamlined consumer care.
- Maintain high level interpersonal, communication, conflict management and negotiation skills with members of the health care team, patients/residents/clients and visitors to the service.
- Attend tutorials, participate and present at grand rounds, attend compulsory courses, and participate in on-the-job training in order to meet college requirements and develop clinical knowledge and skills.
- Act as a role model to residents and interns through providing on the job guidance and direction to and become involved in prevocational educational programs.
- Contribute towards the assessment of junior medical staff.
- Follow hospital practices and demonstrate initiative aligned to ensuring the safest possible environment for patients and staff.
- Be aware of the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHS Standards) and how they relate to this position;
- Actively participate in outcome reviews and audits and participate in organisational systems improvement, including committees.
- Report adverse incidents and near misses and actively participate in Hospital’s Integrated Risk Management and Safety Program, including participation in Incident Monitoring System and Root Cause Analysis where appropriate
- Perform duties as determined by the Service;
- Contribute to a culture of research, innovation, and continuous improvement by actively participating in and supporting initiatives and research that enhances service delivery, encourages new ideas, and translates knowledge into practice.
- All relevant health professionals, who in the course of their duties formulate a reasonable suspicion that a child or youth has been abused or neglected in their home/community environment, have a legislative and a duty of care obligation to immediately report such concerns to Child Safety Services, Department of Communities.
- Ensure patients and other staff are treated fairly and with mutual respect and understanding, regardless of cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, gender, identity, ages or abilities.
- Follow defined service quality standards, occupational health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Mandatory qualifications, professional registration and other requirements
- Completion of a relevant Medical Tertiary degree. Registered as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia
- Currently undertaking Fellowship training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists at an Advanced Trainee level (having completed the requirements of ITP training), or having already obtained a FRANZCOG.
- This position will require undertaking rostered overtime and on-call duties.
- This position may be required to undertake shifts in an extended span of ordinary hours to meet clinical need.
- Acceptance to the RANZCOG CMFM Training program will allow the Fellow to continue accredited training (once accreditation confirmed for the site), but is not a requirement for the position. An unaccredited Fellow would be considered.
- Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association within Australia. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
- This position may require undertaking duties at another hospital either on secondment or rotation.
- This position will require undertaking rostered overtime and on-call duties.
- This position may be required to undertake shifts in an extended span of ordinary hours to meet clinical need.
- Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD): It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment (Health Employment Directive No. 01/16):
- measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
- varicella (chicken pox)
- pertussis (whooping cough)
- hepatitis B.
- Classification Level will be determined by the panel based on successful candidates experience and knowledge.
- Intern (INT) first year after completing Medical degree
- Junior House Officer (JHO) a medical practitioner in the first year of service after eligibility for full registration as a medical practitioner (PGY2).
- Senior House Officer (SHO) a medical practitioner in the second or subsequent years of practical experience after eligibility for full registration as a medical practitioner and who has not been appointed as a registrar or principal house officer (PGY3).
- Principal House Officer (PHO) a medical practitioner appointed as such, including on a temporary basis, after eligibility for full registration as a medical practitioner.
- Registrar (Reg) a medical practitioner appointed as such who is undertaking an accredited course of study leading to a higher medical qualification.
- Senior Registrar (SREG) a medical practitioner appointed as such who has specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
