Purpose of the role
Provide quality medical care, at the level of an unaccredited Obstetrics and Gynaecology Registrar, under the supervision and guidance of consultant medical staff. You will work as a part of a large team of Registrars and PHOs within the O+G Department, across outpatient and inpatient services including regular rostered shifts on Birth Suite, Acute Gynaecology and Caesarean Section Lists. As a part of the role you will supervise and advise junior medical staff and students attached to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
To participate in the provision of clinical care to patients of the hospital and district health service and to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to develop their clinical expertise.

- Staffing and budget responsibilities:
- This position reports to the Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- To facilitate budget and compliance by the efficient and effective use of resources.
- No staffing or budget responsibilities.
- Responsible for the management of patients admitted to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, under the supervision and guidance of the Unit’s Duty Consultant, and for ensuring that the Consultant is kept informed of any significant changes in the condition of any patient which could result in an adverse outcome.
- Ensure comprehensive, legible, accurate and concise medical records are maintained for the patients for whom they are responsible.
- Ensure that each patient in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit has an appropriate admission documented which contains a provisional diagnosis and management plan and the ability to manage a busy labour ward.
- Assess any patient referred to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit by the Emergency Department or another inpatient unit and to bring the referral to the Duty Consultant’s attention so a specialist opinion may be given.
- Interview, examine, carry out procedures according to level of training and arrange appropriate investigations and treatment of medical patients, and to ensure any such actions are properly documented.
- Undertake clinical duties in an outpatient setting, as required by and under the supervision of the Unit Consultant.
- Provide guidance to junior house staff and liaise with nursing/midwifery staff and allied health professionals as clinically appropriate.
- Work rostered shifts at the direction of the Director Obstetrics and Gynaecology or Senior Medical Staff, ensuring availability as rostered or that in the event of illness, notice has been provided in time to arrange suitable cover. Rostering may involve overtime, evening/night shifts, weekends and public holidays.
- Participate in and attend clinical meetings, educational activities and clinical audits Maintain an interest in self-development and education.
- Commit to patient safety and quality in the delivery of health care by actively participating in safety and quality practices.
- Be able to perform core birth suite and gynaecology skills independently with on call consultant on site and remote after hours.
- To provide ethical decision making in the achievement of organisational goals.
- Provide inpatient and outpatient care by
- Assessing patients, determining and instigating appropriate investigations;
- Establish management plan for patients in consultation with the consultant;
- Where appropriate, ensure discharge planning commences early in the process of care (inpatients only);
- Communicate assessment findings, proposed management plans and alternatives to patient and carers and seek consent;
- Gather input from appropriate multidisciplinary team for patients ongoing clinical care;
- Continually monitor and review patient progress and adjust the management plan when necessary; and
- Ensure timely, effective and appropriate clinical handover with other staff and healthcare providers.
- Ensure appropriate and timely communication to the General Practitioner, other health care providers and carers to ensure ongoing patient care post hospital stay.
- Develop a clear understanding of the role and the roles of those in other professions and use this knowledge appropriately to establish consumer goals and to achieve streamlined consumer care.
- Maintain high level interpersonal, communication, conflict management and negotiation skills with members of the health care team, patients/residents/clients and visitors to the service.
- Attend tutorials, participate and present at grand rounds, attend compulsory courses, and participate in on-the-job training in order to meet college requirements and develop clinical knowledge and skills.
- Act as a role model to residents and interns through providing on the job guidance and direction to and become involved in prevocational educational programs.
- Contribute towards the assessment of junior medical staff.
- Follow hospital practices and demonstrate initiative aligned to ensuring the safest possible environment for patients and staff.
- Be aware of the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHS Standards) and how they relate to this position;
- Actively participate in outcome reviews and audits and participate in organisational systems improvement, including committees.
- Report adverse incidents and near misses and actively participate in Hospital’s Integrated Risk Management and Safety Program, including participation in Incident Monitoring System and Root Cause Analysis where appropriate
- Perform duties as determined by the Service;
- Contribute to a culture of research, innovation, and continuous improvement by actively participating in and supporting initiatives and research that enhances service delivery, encourages new ideas, and translates knowledge into practice.
- All relevant health professionals, who in the course of their duties formulate a reasonable suspicion that a child or youth has been abused or neglected in their home/community environment, have a legislative and a duty of care obligation to immediately report such concerns to Child Safety Services, Department of Communities.
- Ensure patients and other staff are treated fairly and with mutual respect and understanding, regardless of cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, gender, identity, ages or abilities.
- Follow defined service quality standards, occupational health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Mandatory qualifications, professional registration and other requirements
- Completion of a relevant Medical Tertiary degree. Registered as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia
- Minimum of 12 months obstetric experience would be well regarded.
- This position will require participation in shift work.
- This position may be required to undertake rostered overtime and on-call duties.
- Ability to manage a busy birth suite with specialist supervision (After hours: Consultant may be 30 mins away).
- This position may rarely require undertaking duties at another hospital, either on secondment or rotation.
- This position may be required to undertake shifts in an extended span of ordinary hours to meet clinical need.
- Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association within Australia. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
