Alice Springs Hospital- Central Australia
Fixed for 2 years in Alice Springs

Alice Springs Hospital has a catchment area of over 1,000,000 km2. We care for some of the nation’s most socially disadvantaged people, with high levels of morbidity and mortality, many with diseases not seen elsewhere in the country

Spectacular national parks surround Alice Springs. The lifestyle is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities and the arts.  The central desert region of Australia is unique. It is a friendly, welcoming place suited to doctors with a sense of adventure and those interested in indigenous health issues, not generally seen by most doctors in Australia

We are a small obstetric unit (about 800 deliveries per year) with some big challenges. Our patient population is culturally diverse and always interesting. The majority are indigenous Australian women, who experience a relatively high burden of health problems which can impact greatly upon pregnancy (eg. diabetes, renal disease, infectious diseases and their sequelae such as rheumatic heart disease).

We aim to offer a high quality generalist gynaecology service, and maintain an active outreach service to far flung communities which are usually accessed by small plane charter service, or by road for the closer communities.

The position would suit someone with interests in general obstetrics and gynaecology and indigenous health. Suitable applicants may be undertaking the advanced Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, post MRANZCOG elective training are registered to practice in Australia.
