Christchurch women's hospital is a busy tertiary referral centre with approximately 6000 deliveries per year incorporating a feto-maternal medicine department as well as a large gynaecology service. We have a largely generalist population of Senior Medical Officers who provide cover for our service and are also the regional referral centre for Gynaecology Oncology for the South Island.
We are a training centre for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG) and have a complement of both training and non-training registrars within our service.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Medical Officer to complete our team covering the services of both Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
We are looking for fixed-term Obstetrics and Gynaecology Medical Specialists in a part-time or full-time role for up to 12 months.
You will be expected to partake in the general duties of the department to fulfil service requirements which includes clinics such as; antenatal, gynaecology, colposcopy and outpatient hysteroscopy as well as acute and elective gynaecology services as required. There is opportunity to further develop within areas of special interest for example ambulatory gynaecology, medical education and high risk obstetrics depending upon your skill set.
You will also be required to take part in the obstetrics and gynaecology on call roster.

The Future of the Health Industry

Christchurch Women's hospital is a 6000 birth per annum, tertiary Obstetrics and Gynaecology service covering a large geographical area from Kaikoura in the north to the Rangitata river in the south and from Arthurs pass to the sea. It offers Gynae Oncology and maternal fetal medicine services for the entire South Island.
There is a large variety of acute and elective obstetric presentations and high risk obstetrics. On the birth suite there are 12 birthing rooms, 2 obstetric theatres on birth suite, nine assessment beds, two acute observation beds and four beds in PACU. The Birth Suite is covered 24 hours a day with two registrars, a SHO, SMO and anaesthetist. There is a daily elective caesarean section list.
The gynaecology service includes inpatient and outpatient services. There are 27 inpatient gynaecology beds, a five bed gynaecology assessment unit and a separate colposcopy and outpatient hysteroscopy unit. There are four elective lists per day Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and three elective lists on Wednesday and a senior registrar list on Fridays, as well as some out-placed lists for registrar operating experience. There is a dedicated gynaecology acute list Wednesday and Friday. The early pregnancy unit is nurse led and run out of the gynaecology assessment unit and is supported by a medical management of miscarriage protocol and a weekly MVAC clinic for surgical management of miscarriage. This list is registrar led.
There is a team structure for day to day patient care. The after hours roster is arranged so all nights and weekends are done in a two week block to allow for maximum team based training time. Long days are done outside of this block. Weekend days are staffed by 2 SHO's until 4pm, two registrars and a SMO.
The O and G Department can offer experience in Minimally Access surgery with many SMO's able to perform and teach TLH. There is also opportunity in Fetal Medicine, Gynae Oncology there is a separate GONC Fellow) Fertility, Urogynaecology and High risk Obstetrics.
