Head of Obstetrics, Western Health

  • Lead with excellence, advancing patient care through high-quality, innovative services.
  • Collaborate for better health as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team, committed to delivering compassionate, people-centred healthcare.
  • Shape the future of obstetric care with a focus on quality improvement, education, patient safety, and collaboration with midwives.

Overview:
Alumni Global is excited to partner with Western Health in the search for an experienced and strategic Head of Obstetrics. This critical role offers an opportunity to lead a high-performing team while contributing to the transformation of obstetrics services, ensuring the needs of a diverse and multicultural population are met across the six campuses.

With a catchment area speaking over 150 languages and a high proportion of complex, high-risk cases, you will be at the forefront of overseeing the delivery of exceptional care. In addition, you will be responsible for strengthening collaborative care practices with midwives, enhancing this core element of obstetric services.

As Western Health’s obstetric services continue to evolve to meet the growing demand in the region, this leadership role will be integral to advancing these services and identifying opportunities for improvement.

About Western Health:
Western Health provides a comprehensive range of health services to Melbourne's west, including maternity, gynaecology, neonatal, and paediatric care. Our Women's & Children’s Division plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred services, with more than 7,000 babies born annually. Western Health’s six campuses, including Sunshine, Joan Kirner, and Bacchus Marsh, provide care to one of Australia’s most diverse populations.

As the demand for services in the region grows, Western Health is committed to expanding its Obstetrics services, which will include the construction of a new hospital in Melton by 2029.

About the Role:
The Head of Obstetrics will provide visionary leadership to the department, ensuring the highest clinical standards and operational efficiency. This role includes managing budgets, KPIs, and overseeing strategic initiatives to enhance patient care.

A key aspect of this role is fostering strong collaboration with midwives to ensure that our services remain people-centred and culturally sensitive, in line with Western Health’s commitment to teamwork and inclusivity. You will lead quality improvement initiatives and drive clinical governance, creating a safe and supportive environment for both staff and patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Team Development: Foster a high-performance culture, focusing on recruitment, retention, and professional development. Provide mentoring to staff and encourage a collaborative approach to care, particularly with midwifery teams.
  • Clinical Excellence & Governance: Ensure all obstetric services are aligned with best practice guidelines and lead quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, and incident reviews.
  • Strategic Planning & Operations: Develop and implement operational plans aligned with Western Health’s strategic goals. Manage budgets and KPIs, optimising departmental performance.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with midwives, neonatal teams, and other medical professionals to ensure seamless care for high-risk obstetric patients.
  • Community-Centred Care: Lead initiatives to ensure that obstetric services are culturally sensitive, accessible, and meet the needs of the diverse community.

About You:
We are seeking a leader with significant clinical and managerial experience in Obstetrics, ideally within a tertiary hospital setting. You should have a strong track record in leading teams, improving performance, and ensuring clinical excellence in high-volume environments.

To succeed in this role, you will need to meet the following requirements:

·         Fellowship of RANZCOG and eligibility for specialist credentialing at Western Health.

·         Registered with AHPRA as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

·         Proven experience as a clinically active obstetrician in a tertiary maternity service.

·         Strong reputation for upholding and modelling Western Health’s CARES values.

·         Ability to adapt to emerging technologies and clinical practices.

·         Experience in clinical governance, accreditation, and risk management.

·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a focus on teamwork.

·         Demonstrated success in building high-performance teams and achieving strategic outcomes.

·         Strong organisational skills and ability to manage time and delegate effectively.

Why Western Health?

  • Work across six campuses in a supportive, collaborative environment.
  • Be part of an organisation committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, with a strong focus on collaboration and professional development.
